WHAT
IS
A
LONG
COAT?
While we
no longer breed Akitas or Shibas and instead
have only Pembroke Welsh Corgis now...We will
utilize this page and our past experiences with
them to give a visual and to help explain this
"long-coat" recessive gene that has
occurred in our past and also now in our
present.
Long-coat
puppies do occur
in
litters
out
of
standard
coated
parents
on
occasion.
While
there
is
not
currently an AKC recognized coat
length
variety in the Pembroke Welsh Corgi breed, there
is
one in some of the other AKC breeds ..such as the
Chow-Chow,
the
Collie and the St. Bernard, for
example.
Long
coated
Pembroke Welsh Corgis are certainly
not
disqualified
from
the
AKC
ring but they are not typically shown.
There
are
some long
coated
AKC
Champions
in these breeds but it has been some time since they have been
exhibited.
It's true
that the
long-coats in these breeds are becoming less and
less common as time goes on and especially since
there is a test now to see if breeding animals
will throw a longer coated variety in their
puppies.
We at DTR do not breed or exhibit our
long-coated puppies but we just wanted to make a
note that it has been done and so therefore we
feel it deserves mentioning.
Our own
long-coated / "Teddy Bear" puppies are STILL very much champions in our homes
and in our hearts.
The
long
coated
versions usually carry
approximately
3
inches
more
coat
than
the
standard
coated
examples. Long
coats
do
not
shed
more
than
their
standard
coated
counterparts but they can and sometimes do require
a
bit
more
brushing
and
overall
coat
care.
Below,
are
some
examples
of
long
coated
Akitas
and
Shibas,
from
our
past
and
from
our
friends
and
