WHAT
IS
A
LONG
COAT?
Long
coated
Akita
puppies
occur
in
litters
out
of
standard
coated
parents
on
a
regular
basis.
While
there
is
not
yet
a
coat
length
variety,
with
regards
to
Akitas
in
the
AKC
ring,
there
is
one
with
the
Chow-Chow
and
the
Collie,
for
example.
The
long
coated
Akita
is
certainly
not
disqualified
from
the
AKC
ring.
There
are
long
coated
Akita
AKC
Champions
as
well
as
standard
coated
Akita
AKC
Champions.
They
are
just
not
as
common
and
the
long
coats
are
not
regularly
exhibited.
We at DTR do not breed or exhibit our
long-coated Akitas but it has been done and
therefore deserves mentioning. Our own
long-coated Akitas are champions in our homes
and in our hearts.
The
long
coated
Akita
usually
carries
approximately
3
to
4
inches
more
coat
than
the
standard
coated
Akita.
The
long
coats
do
not
shed
more
than
the
standard
coated
Akita
but
do
require
a
bit
more
brushing
and
overall
coat
care.
The
long
coated
Akita's
coats
are
very
similar
to
the
Samoyeds
or
the
long
coated
Chow-Chow's
coats.
Below,
are
some
examples
of
long
coated
Akitas
as
puppies
and
as
adults.
The
long
coated
Akitas
seem
to
carry
that
giant,
"teddy
bear"
look
that
they
have
during
puppy-hood
throughout
their
lives.

They
are
cute
as
can
be.
